Dental Sealants

A dental sealant is a thin composite coating(similar to the material used for fillings) that is placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The molars and premolars(back teeth) have grooves that are susceptible to dental decay. This is especially the case with the initial eruption of teeth into the mouth. In the examination of your kid's teeth it is important to evaluate the depth of the grooves on the back teeth. If these grooves are excessively deep, a dental sealant may be recommended to reduce the risk of decay.
